How Drill Pay Works

The Math

Guard and Reserve members are paid based on the same base pay tables as active duty. The difference: instead of a full monthly salary, you're paid per drill period. One drill period equals 1/30th of monthly base pay — the same as one day of active duty pay.

FORMULA
1 Drill Period = Base Pay / 30
1 Drill Weekend = 4 x (Base Pay / 30)
Annual Drill Pay = 48 x (Base Pay / 30)
Annual Training = 15 x (Base Pay / 30)
Total Annual = 63 x (Base Pay / 30)

What Counts as a Drill Period

A drill period is a minimum 4-hour training session. A standard drill weekend (sometimes called a "Battle Assembly" or "MUTA") consists of 4 drill periods: 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Some units schedule additional MUTAs (e.g., MUTA-6 or MUTA-8) which means more drill periods and more pay for that weekend.

Standard Schedule

The standard commitment is one weekend per month (12 weekends/year = 48 drill periods) plus two weeks of Annual Training (15 consecutive days). During AT, you receive full active-duty pay for each day, calculated the same way: base pay / 30 per day.
