How VA Math Works
Example: 50% + 30% + 10%
1. Start: 100% healthy body
2. First condition (50%): lose 50 of 100 = 50% disabled
3. Second (30%): 30% of remaining 50 = 15 more = 65% disabled
4. Third (10%): 10% of remaining 35 = 3.5 more = 68.5% disabled
68.5% rounds to 70% (NOT 90%)
Why doesn't the VA add ratings together?
The VA uses "combined ratings" instead of simple addition. Each condition is applied to the remaining "healthy" percentage. A 50% rating means you're 50% disabled and 50% healthy. A second 30% rating applies to that remaining 50% healthy portion.
How does VA rounding work?
The VA rounds the exact combined percentage to the nearest 10%. 65% rounds up to 70%. 64% rounds down to 60%. This rounding can mean hundreds of dollars per month.
What is TDIU?
Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) lets veterans who cannot hold substantial employment get paid at the 100% rate even if their combined rating is below 100%. You need one condition at 60%+ or a combined 70%+ with one at 40%+.
When should I file my claim?
File as early as possible. If still on active duty, use Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) 180-90 days before ETS. Your benefits start from the date of your claim, not the decision date.
