GI Bill FAQ
How is the housing allowance calculated?
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) based on the E-5 with dependents BAH rate at your school's ZIP code. Full-time students receive 100%, 3/4 time gets 75%, half-time gets 50%. Online-only students receive 50% of the national average BAH regardless of location.
Can I transfer my GI Bill to my spouse or children?
Yes — if you have at least 6 years of service and commit to 4 additional years. You must apply for transfer while still on active duty through milConnect. The benefit can be split among multiple dependents.
How long do I have to use it?
For service after January 1, 2013: 15 years from your last separation date. There is no expiration for veterans who were discharged before that date (Forever GI Bill provision).
What is the Yellow Ribbon Program?
If your school's tuition exceeds the GI Bill cap ($28,937/yr for private schools), the Yellow Ribbon Program can cover the gap. The school and VA each pay a portion. Not all schools participate — check va.gov/education/yellow-ribbon-program.
Do I receive housing during breaks?
MHA is paid based on your enrollment. During summer break, you typically do not receive MHA unless enrolled in summer classes. The payment covers the period you are actively enrolled and attending.
